Vibrant and paradisal, Sol Calero’s evocative paintings often refer to her Venezuelan heritage and the western projections of exoticized imagery that has become synonymous with Latin American culture. Abstracted paintings of ripe fruit, heavy blossoms and swaying leaves seem to invite the viewer into another world, one that is oblivious to the socio-economic and political realities of contemporary Latin American societies. Her most recent paintings open up a new narrative direction in the artist’s pictorial practice, in their oneiric compositions blending still life, landscapes and anecdotes.
