No alla fallocrazia / No to phallocracy, 1975

Acrylic on canvas in artist’s frame; 101 × 81.5 × 1.5 cm

The works from this series of paintings, including No alla fallocrazia (No to Phallocracy) and Verso una libertà anche se minacciata (Toward a Freedom, Even if Threatened), both from 1975, mark a significant evolution in Parrocchetti’s painting practice. After 1969, she increasingly distanced herself from painting as a medium, making these works unusual within her artistic production of the period. Their restricted palette of reds, pinks, blues, and greys contributes to a lighter, more open visual language, while the direct, geometric shapes appear more simplified and freer than in her earlier work.

The works’ titles are particularly revealing in regard to her political activism through her art: No alla fallocrazia (No to phallocracy) directly confronts patriarchal structures of power, while Verso una libertà anche se minacciata (Toward a freedom even if threatened) articulates a vision of liberation tempered by the recognition of its precariousness. In this sense, the paintings demonstrate how Parrocchetti’s formal language evolved alongside her feminist activism, with the increasingly direct and simplified compositions giving visual form to ideas that had become central to her political and artistic practice.
