Agnes Scherer, Hornvariation 1, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, Ink felt pen on paper, 109.7 × 84 cm
Agnes Scherer’s handmade works on paper immerse visitors in her neo-baroque narrative. This piece builds on the artist’s previous works that deal with the politically instrumentalist and fabled cultural legacy of Marie Antoinette. In a playful and fantastical manner typical of Scherer, with similarities to magical realism, the artist interrogates past and present utopianism.
The works from this series all combine filigree felt-tip drawings and fairytale-like painted passe-partouts. In a primarily blue palette, they show humanoid protagonists, hunting and signaling horns and vegetation in symmetrical and carefully handcrafted compositions.
