Buscando guanábana III, 2024

Buscando guanábana III, 2024, Oil sticks and blackboard paint on canvas, 150 × 120 × 2 cm

Sol Calero’s oil stick and blackboard painting depicts lush tropical flora, including soursops. Referencing Rubén Blades’ song Buscando guayaba ando yo, the painting marks the first appearance of the soursop—a fruit native to Central America and the Caribbean—in her oeuvre. This motif reflects her ongoing artistic and personal exploration of belonging and cultural identity. The work is part of a series of paintings featured in her 2024 solo exhibition Buscando guanábana ando yo (Busy Looking for Soursops), curated by Tania Pardo at Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M) in Madrid.
