We are all Mermaids: Mermaids, boundary crossers, and the beauty of fluidity
Curated by Liza Dieckwisch
Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, Wilhelmshaven
2 August – 5 October 2025
The exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven explores the age-old myth of the mermaid as a projection screen for fears, longings, and worldviews. The focus is on the contemporary reception of this myth, showcasing primarily works of visual art, but also music, literature, and everyday culture.
The exhibition centers on fluid aesthetics that oscillate between myth, digital visuality, and societal discourse. It traces these currents and builds bridges to themes such as feminism, queerness, and new materialism. Accompanying events deepen these perspectives—scientifically, poetically, and playfully—and make Wilhelmshaven’s maritime environment itself part of the narrative.
