The immersive installations of Sol Calero (* 1982 in Caracas, Venezuela) are similar to a work of art: color intensive, rich in decorative, but also usable objects and equipped with paintings, furniture, self-made fabrics and video work. Calero transforms neutral into functional and communicative spaces – galleries became hairdressers or internet cafes, a museum a wellness oasis. In the use of diverse tropical motifs and opulent aesthetics, she questioned our clichéed notion of the exotic and thus the construction of identity and nationality.

For Interiores , Sol Calero’s first major institutional solo exhibition in Germany, she focuses on painting as the process of abstraction for the first time. In the tradition of Venezuelan sculptor Jesus Rafael Soto (1923-2005), she transforms the entirety of the Kunstverein into a painting – her painting – into which the visitor is immersed. This creates a place without functionality, which nevertheless continues to show the conflicts and contradictions of our own value system, filling our desires and longings with sensual, distracting and humorous elements.
