The Garden Bridge
Brücke-Museum, Berlin
11 August – 13 October 2019

The Garden Bridge is an outdoor project in the garden of Brücke-Museum. Inspired by the Brücke artists’ original stated intentions of bridging the old and the new, project space Kinderhook & Caracas (run by artists Sol Calero and Christopher Kline) curated an outdoor project featuring works and performances by contemporary Berlin-based artists aimed at expanding the discourse surrounding the canonizing of historical, future-focused art movements.

For this exhibition, Petrit Halilaj & Alvaro Urbano have built two birdhouses and placed in them recordings of each other while sleeping. Each of the birdhouses contain either Halilaj or Urbano’s sounds of snoring and sleeping, and exist as subtle, playful and intimate interludes to the forest environment. Embracing the symbol of the nest as a shelter and a protective structure, the work provides a glimpse into the private sphere. Both charming and effacing, they invite the reflection upon the balance of love, the sometimes disruptive consequences of sharing a life as complementary parts of human nature. The work is an ongoing series continued individually by both artists. The works, which refer to each other, constitute the notion of a continuously developing portrait of a partner.
