Tyra Tingleff (b. 1984, Norway) lives and works between Oslo and Berlin. She graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, with a Master’s in Painting in 2013 and the National Academy of the Arts Bergen in 2008.

Tingleff’s paintings radiate color and movement. They can be seen as tests of objectivity in which background and foreground loop and invert to create a deliberately unsteady pictorial plane. While following the abstract tradition, Tingleff asserts her departure from the heaviness of its manifestos and historically male canon, drawing instead closer to the morally and aesthetically ambiguous. The works are accompanied by fragmented titles imbued with humor, vulnerability and irony, acting as disembodied guides or counterparts to the visual. Tingleff’s twin processes of layering paint and then thinning it to diaphanous traces result in hallucinatory canvases whose time formations are impossible to decipher, an infinity of decisions coursing beneath their smooth surfaces.

Solo and group exhibitions include: Kunstnerfubundet, Oslo (upcoming); SALTS, Basel; Kunsthall Oslo; Kunstverein Arnsberg; The Sunday Painter, London; Frankfurt am Main. Berlin; Studio Leigh, London; RH Contemporary Art, New York; Chert, Berlin; Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo;  Spazio Cabinet, Milan, among others.

Her first catalogue will be published by Mousse in Autumn 2021.
